Different Types of Stain
Transparent Stain
Using a transparent stain allows you to see the natural wood grain of your fence through the stain. It can be clear or tinted to your specifications, and this type of stain is usually applied to new wood because it will not hide stains or other imperfections. You should choose use this type of stain if you have a brand new fence that has been recently installed in the last month or two. This stain will not cover well or look good on older fences.
Semi-Transparent Stain
Semi-Transparent stains are very similar to Transparent stains but introduce delicate color to the wood's surface. Semi-Transparent stains contain the lightest pigmentation designed to accentuate natural wood grain and character. These types of stain look good on most fences and have a variety of colors that give a rustic type look. These types of stain are what most Home Owner Associations will approve when installing a new fence.
Solid Stain
Solid color stain looks like paint, but soaks into wood instead of sitting on top of it. As it ages, stain breaks down by fading rather than peeling. Older layers of solid color stain tend to look better than paint does over time.
Solid stain provides a flat finish, which showcases wood grain. This stain lasts the longest and is great for restoring an older fence. This type of stain looks great on treated pine lumber, cedar, or redwood. As long as the wood isn't rotting, choose this stain if you don't want to install a new fence.
